What’s good about libraries? H

Library A to Z: HI’m following the A to Z Challenge by posting every day in April (except Sundays) about the importance of libraries. I’m using the Library A to Z advocacy materials and a small selection of quotations in each post.

What good things about libraries begin with H?

Health; help; heritage; history; holiday reading; home (access library materials from); homework help.

Ending with homework help is appropriate as there’s a bias towards school libraries in today’s quotes.

Stephanie Harvey: Libraries should be the beating heart of the school, not mausoleums for dusty books. (Quoted on the Heart of the School site.)

Timothy Healy: The most important asset of any library goes home at night – the library staff.

Richard Holloway: I’d rather be a poor man with a library at my street corner than a billionaire who never opens a book.

Anthony Horowitz: The most important room in any school is the library. Every school needs one.

Do you have any other suggestions for H? Thanks to my friend, Ted Milburn, who has already made a suggestion for H:

I am looking forward to “H”, and I hope you will add Gerard Hoffnung’s lovely quotation in his sketch “Advice to Foreign Visitors to Britain“. One of his suggestions to them was… “Have you tried the magnificent echo in the Reading Room of the British Museum?”

The whole thing is very funny and worth a listen, so follow the link to check it out.

  1. I love libraries. My husband’s Aunt was a librarian in Los Angeles most her life. She knew everything, I mean everything. She was an archaeologist and loved to show me the digs of La Brea Tar Pits and then the libraries around town. I have a book written by a women during the times of the Civil War. I got through the giant thing and low and behold the last few pages were missing. After months searching it out she sent me copies of the missing pages. Libraries are a must. I am greatly disappointed that few and few are existing today. If anything, they are a wonderful quiet spot to sit in. I love the smell.
Glad I visited this other blog of yours today!

  2. Heroic stories and experiences from real battles and wars! Libraries have umpteenth books about them. Though I recently read about Houdini, which is altogether a different thing 🙂

  3. Homebound – One librarian coordinates 100s of volunteers. Services range from library books by mail with free postage each way or volunteer delivers and stays to discuss books.

  4. This is a wonderful theme. There is no joy as reading a book … this despite extensive stuff to read online. Do you plan to write about heritage libraries from around the world? Stopping by via the AtoZ 🙂

    1. Thank you! Re heritage libraries – a couple slip in when I ran out of quotes, but otherwise not this time. I’m also doing the challenge on another blog so I need to keep this short and sweet! I’m considering it for next year though!
