What’s good about libraries? A

Library A to Z: AI’m following the A to Z Challenge by posting every day in April (except Sundays) about the importance of libraries. I’m using the Library A to Z advocacy materials and a small selection of quotations in each post.

What good things about libraries begin with A?

Access; advice; answers; archives; art (view public art and sometimes borrow it too!); astronomy (some libraries loan out telescopes for stargazing); audio books; author events.

People whose names begin with A have had a lot to say about libraries! Here’s a selection.

Stephen Abram, VP strategic partnerships & markets, Gale: Getting rid of librarians because everything is online = getting rid of accountants because everyone has a calculator on their desk.”

John Agard: Libraries…they are my orchard; I am their fruit.

Maya Angelou: I always knew from that moment, from the time I found myself at home in that little segregated library in the South, all the way up until I walked up the steps of the New York City library, I always felt, in any town, if I can get to a library, I’ll be OK. It really helped me as a child, and that never left me.

Anonymous: A library is a hospital for the mind.

Isaac Asimov: Dear Boys and Girls, Congratulations on the new library, because it isn’t just a library. It is a space ship that will take you to the farthest reaches of the Universe, a time machine that will take you to the far past and the far future, a teacher that knows more than any human being, a friend that will amuse you and console you…and most of all, a gateway to a better and happier and more useful life. (16 March 1971.)

Do you have any other suggestions for A?

  1. I love your theme, and I love libraries. I can’t imagine life without them! Every time I’ve moved to a new town getting a libaray card has been one of the first things on my list.

  2. Just some additions to art… In addition to viewing public art and sometimes borrowing it, there’s also learning about it. Books, databases and partnerships with art organizations. This spring through a partnership with a local “center for the arts” we are offering various intro classes for teens. We had one at my library today and I was amazed at what they made.

  3. I love libraries! My dad’s mother was the librarian in the town where I grew up. I spent countless hours there readingreadingreading! I wanted to read every book in that library. 🙂 Visiting from A-Z.

  4. It’s me again. I forgot about our assistive technology kit (large print keyboard, an optical trackball mouse, a personal pocket amplifier and a lighted magnifying glass are available for use in the library) and adaptive software on all computers.
